What Is Golden Hour, and Why It Is Rarely an Hour

It is defined by the sun's angle, not by the clock, which is why it is 41 minutes in one place and nine hours in another.

Search for how to calculate golden hour and you will get a page of calculators. Type in a place, get a time. None of them tell you what they are calculating, and several appear to be doing something as crude as subtracting sixty minutes from sunset.

Golden hour is not a fixed period before sunset. It is a range of sun altitudes, and how long the sun takes to cross that range depends on where you are standing and what month it is.

The definition

Golden hour runs while the sun sits between +6 degrees and −4 degrees relative to the horizon.

The top of the range is where the light has already turned warm and directional but there is still plenty of it. The bottom is where the sun has been below the horizon long enough that direct light is gone and the sky takes over — the handover to blue hour.

Those two numbers are the convention photographers settled on, and they are what this site uses. They are angles because the quality of the light is a function of angle: the lower the sun, the longer the path its light takes through the atmosphere, the more short wavelengths get scattered out of it, and the warmer and softer what arrives becomes.

Sixty minutes has nothing to do with it. The name is a historical accident of the fact that at the latitudes where most photography writing was produced, the window happens to be roughly an hour.

Why the number moves so much

The sun's daily path is a circle tilted relative to your horizon, and the tilt depends on your latitude.

Stand on the equator and that circle is nearly vertical. The sun crosses the ten degrees between +6 and −4 in a little over forty minutes and it does that every day of the year, give or take three minutes. There is no golden season in Nairobi. There is golden hour, every evening, and it is short.

Stand at 51 degrees in London and the same ten degrees takes about an hour, varying by roughly twenty minutes between June and December. Stand at 64 degrees in Reykjavík and the number swings wildly: about ninety minutes at the equinoxes, and in high summer the sun never gets down to −4 degrees at all, so the golden band simply does not close. The light stays in it all night.

Go further still and the effect inverts. At Longyearbyen in June the sun never comes down to +6 degrees either — it circles the sky too high to produce golden light at all. The midnight sun is bright, flat and white, which is not what people expect when they book the trip.

The four cases the calculators get wrong

Anything that treats golden hour as sunset minus sixty minutes produces a wrong answer in most of the world and a nonsensical one in the north. There are four distinct situations:

  1. Ordinary. The sun crosses +6 and later −4. Golden hour has a start and an end. This covers most of the populated world most of the year.
  2. All night. The sun drops past +6 but never reaches −4. Golden-quality light runs from evening until the sun climbs back past +6 in the morning. Reykjavík in June; Longyearbyen for a stretch either side of its midnight-sun period.
  3. All day. The sun never climbs above +6 at all. Everything from the moment it rises to the moment it sets is inside the golden band. This is a high-latitude winter case and it is a genuinely good time to be there with a camera.
  4. None. Either the sun never rises to −4 — polar night — or it never falls to +6, which is the high midnight sun. Both mean no golden hour, for different reasons.

This site distinguishes all four. If you open a city page inside the Arctic Circle in June you will be told the sun stays too high, not shown a pair of times that do not mean anything.

The morning window is not the same length

Morning golden hour is the same band traversed in the other direction, running from −4 up to +6 as the sun rises. On any given day it is close to the evening figure but not identical, because the sun's declination changes over the course of the day. The difference is a few minutes at mid-latitudes and larger near the solstices.

More usefully, the two happen on opposite sides of the sky. The sun rises and sets on different bearings, and the gap between them widens as you go north. That is a composition problem before it is a timing one.

Using this

The practical version is short.

Arrive before it starts. The window in the table is the light, not the time you have to work. Fifteen minutes to find a position and set up is a reasonable minimum, and at the equator, where you have forty minutes total, arriving as it starts means missing a third of it.

Do not leave at sunset. Golden hour ends four degrees below the horizon, which in most cities is fifteen to twenty minutes after the sun has visibly gone. The last part of it is the best part.

Check the bearing, not just the time. Every city page here shows the compass direction the sun sets on today and how far that direction moves across the year. A viewpoint that works in June may be facing the wrong way in December.
