Sunset and sunrise times in Kampala, Uganda

Sitting on the western side of its time zone puts solar noon at 12:36, a full 37 minutes after twelve o'clock, and drags the whole day — sunrise, noon and sunset — along with it.

From sunset to full civil darkness is 21 minutes here, against a 24-minute median elsewhere today. Latitude 0.3°N accounts for the 3-minute difference.

The sun does not set in the same place twice: the December solstice puts it WSW, June swings it 47° round to WNW. Tonight, W.

By the end of October the sun will be setting 6 minutes earlier than it did on the first, a shift of roughly 13 seconds a day.

Twice a year the sun passes directly overhead here — on 22 March and 22 September — and vertical objects cast almost no shadow at solar noon.

Sunset lands at close to the same time all year — the annual spread in day length is only 2 minutes, compared with about 8.8 hours at London's latitude.

Standing 1,223 m up buys you 4.9 extra minutes of evening sun: the higher you are, the further over the curve of the Earth you can see, by 1.21° here.

Around a solstice the day length flattens out, and that is where the calendar is now: the shortest day is 21 December, in 2 months, and sunset moves a mere 3 minutes earlier in the coming fortnight.
