What Daylight Saving Actually Does to Your Sunset Time
The debate about abolishing it is everywhere. What it actually does to the evening, in numbers, is not.

The mechanism
Nothing happens to the sun. On the night the clocks change, the Earth continues turning exactly as before, and the sun sets at the same astronomical moment it would have anyway.
What changes is the label. Moving clocks forward one hour in spring means that the instant which would have been called 19:00 is now called 20:00. Sunset therefore appears to jump an hour later overnight, and every other time of day moves with it.
In autumn the reverse: clocks go back, and sunset appears to jump an hour earlier. This is why the end of October in Europe feels like a cliff edge — the evenings had been shortening by two minutes a day and then lose an hour in one night.
The table above shows the sunset time on the night before and the night after each city's next transition. The gap is not exactly one hour, because the natural seasonal drift of a couple of minutes over those two days is in there too.
Who does it and who does not
Roughly a third of the world's countries observe it, and the pattern is strongly latitudinal.
Near the equator, day length barely varies, so there is nothing to shift. Almost no country within about 25 degrees of the equator observes daylight saving, and those that tried it abandoned it.
At mid-latitudes the seasonal swing is large enough that moving the clock meaningfully changes how much daylight falls after the working day, which is the entire rationale.
At very high latitudes it becomes marginal again for the opposite reason: when midsummer has twenty hours of daylight, an extra hour in the evening changes little, and in midwinter there is not enough daylight for the shift to relocate.
The dates are not standardised. The European Union changes on the last Sunday in March and October. The United States and Canada use the second Sunday in March and the first in November. The southern hemisphere is offset by six months. For several weeks each year the usual offset between Europe and North America is an hour different from normal, which is a recurring nuisance for anyone scheduling across the Atlantic.
Why it stacks with the time zone offset
Daylight saving is one of two separate reasons your clock disagrees with the sun, and they add.
The first is where you sit in your time zone, which is permanent and can be over an hour on its own. Madrid's solar noon is 77 minutes after clock noon on standard time.
Add daylight saving on top and Madrid's solar noon in July is at 14:16. The sun peaks in the middle of the afternoon. The famously late Spanish evening is that arithmetic, not a cultural preference.
London is the useful contrast. On standard time its solar noon is within two minutes of clock noon, because it sits on the meridian its time zone was built around. Its summer offset is almost entirely daylight saving. Anyone attributing London's late summer sunsets to its position in its time zone has the wrong cause.
What actually changes for you
Nothing about the light. The same amount of daylight falls on the same day either way. The clock change moves where it sits relative to your schedule, not how much of it there is.
A lot about your schedule. An hour of daylight moved from before you wake to after you finish work is the whole point, and for people with fixed working hours it is a real change in how much usable daylight they get.
Photography plans need re-checking. A golden hour at 19:30 becomes 20:30 overnight. If you have a standing arrangement — a weekly walk, a regular viewpoint — it moves with the clock and you may need to move with it.
Sunrise gets worse before it gets better. Moving clocks forward in spring pushes sunrise later too, which is why late March mornings in northern Europe are briefly dark again after weeks of improvement.
How this site handles it
The clocks changing is exactly the kind of edge case that produces wrong numbers in software, so it is worth stating what we do.
Every time on this site is computed as an absolute instant and then rendered in the city's own timezone using the IANA database, which knows every transition for every zone including historical ones. There is no offset arithmetic anywhere that could drift.
In the monthly calendar tables the day-length change column is computed from the underlying instants, not from the displayed clock times. Without that, the day of a transition would show a spurious one-hour jump in day length, which is a bug several sites have.
And where a city has a transition coming, its page says so in plain language — the date, and the sunset time either side of it — so the jump in the table has an explanation next to it rather than looking like an error.
The debate, briefly
Since it comes up: the arguments for abolition are mostly about the disruption of the change itself rather than about which time to keep, and the evidence on health effects from the transition is reasonably strong.
Which permanent option to choose is a genuine trade-off. Permanent summer time gives late sunsets in June and very dark winter mornings — in northern Britain, sunrise after 10:00. Permanent standard time gives sunrise before 04:00 in June. There is no arrangement that makes both ends comfortable at high latitude, which is why the debate persists.
