The Best Months for Sunset Photography, by Latitude
Every guide to sunset photography ignores where you are standing. It is the variable that matters most.
Search for the best time of year to shoot sunsets and you will get advice about weather, haze and autumn colour. All of it is latitude-agnostic, and latitude is the largest term in the equation.
The amount of golden light available on a given evening varies by a factor of two across the year in London, by nearly four in Reykjavík, and hardly at all in Singapore. Which month is best — and whether the question even has an answer — depends entirely on where you are.

Reading it
The spread column is the important one. It is how much the longest evening beats the shortest, as a percentage.
Below about 12 per cent there is no meaningful best month, and the table says so rather than naming one. In Singapore and Nairobi every month is within a few minutes of every other, and choosing a month for the light would be choosing on noise. Go when the weather is good.
Above that, a real seasonal pattern exists and it is worth planning around.
Why winter is often better at mid-latitudes
This is the result that surprises people. In London and cities at similar latitude, the longest golden hours are in December, not June.
The cause is the angle the sun's path makes with the horizon. Golden hour is the time spent crossing ten degrees of altitude, and near the winter solstice at mid-latitudes the sun's daily arc meets the horizon at its most oblique. It slides rather than drops, and the crossing takes longer.
There is a second, practical advantage. In December in London, golden hour falls in the middle of the afternoon rather than at ten in the evening. You can photograph a sunset and still have dinner at a normal time, and the light arrives when city streets are busy rather than empty.
The disadvantages are equally real: worse weather, more overcast, and a low sun that stays behind buildings in an urban setting.
This inverts as you go further north. Above about 60 degrees, midwinter has so little daylight that the total available light collapses even as the golden window stretches — and past the Arctic Circle there is no sunset at all. Reykjavík's best month is June, not December, for exactly that reason.
The four regimes
Tropical, under about 25 degrees. No best month. Golden hour is 40 to 50 minutes every evening of the year. Plan around the wet and dry seasons, not the sun. The compensation is reliability: you always know what you are getting.
Mid-latitude, 25 to 50 degrees. A real swing, usually favouring winter for window length. This is where the table earns its keep, because the intuition that summer is the photography season is often backwards for this specific purpose.
High mid-latitude, 50 to 60 degrees. The largest useful swings. Long windows in winter, very long evenings in summer, and around midsummer the white nights effect where twilight never fully ends.
Sub-Arctic and above, 60 degrees plus. The extremes. Reykjavík in June has golden light for hours; in December it has a few hours of daylight in total, all of it low and warm. Both are excellent and neither resembles ordinary conditions. Above the Arctic Circle the concept breaks entirely for part of the year, as covered in midnight sun and polar night.
The trade-off nobody states
Long golden hours and good weather rarely coincide.
At mid-latitudes the longest windows are in winter, which is also the cloudiest, wettest and coldest part of the year. The clear evenings of a settled summer anticyclone come with the shortest golden hours of the year and a sunset at an inconvenient hour.
There is no way around this, only a choice about which constraint to optimise. If you have one evening, take the weather. If you have a fortnight, take the season with the longer windows and accept that you will lose some days.
What to actually do with this
Pick the month from the table, then the evening from the forecast. The month decides how much light you get; the evening decides whether there is anything for it to fall on.
Do not import a habit. A photographer who works at 55 degrees and travels to the tropics will consistently arrive late, because the window they are used to is twice as long as the one they have.
Check the direction as well as the timing. The sunset bearing moves through the year by as much as 79 degrees, so the month that gives you the longest light may put the sun somewhere your viewpoint cannot use.
Your own city
Every golden-hour page on this site carries a bar chart of golden-hour minutes by month for that specific city, with the best month marked — or explicitly not marked, where the spread is too small for the claim to mean anything.
That last part is deliberate. A site that names a best month for Singapore is telling you something it cannot support, and we would rather say the year is flat.
Worked examples
London. Best month December, at roughly 86 minutes an evening against 65 in March — a spread of 24 per cent. The catch is that a December evening in London is overcast more often than not, and the sun is low enough to be blocked by almost any building. The compromise most people arrive at is late October and early November: still long windows, the sun still high enough to clear an urban skyline, and autumn weather that alternates rather than settling into grey.
Reykjavík. Best month June, and the spread is 78 per cent — the largest in the table. But the June figure is misleading on its own, because for part of that month the golden band never closes and the number becomes "all night". The genuinely useful periods are the shoulders, late April to May and August, when the sun spends hours near the horizon without the round-the-clock daylight that makes sleeping and scheduling difficult.
Sydney. June, mirroring London's December for the same reason. The southern winter gives the obliquest sun angles and the longest windows, and Sydney's winter weather is far better than London's, which makes it one of the more comfortable places to take advantage of the effect.
Singapore. No best month, and the table says so. Forty to forty-three minutes every evening, all year. The variable that matters there is the monsoon, not the sun.
A note on what the numbers are
The figures come from sampling the evening window every five days through each month and scaling to the month length, which lands within about one per cent of a full day-by-day sum. The pages say "about" for that reason.
The window itself is the sun crossing from +6 to −4 degrees of altitude, which is the angular definition of golden hour rather than a fixed offset from sunset. That distinction is the whole reason the table has any variation in it: measured as "the hour before sunset", every city would score sixty minutes every month, and the question would have no answer anywhere.
